Figuring Out Curl Types

curly natural hair types

It will be hard to determine your curl type if you have damaged, relaxed, dry, or chemically treated curls. Curls needs to be clean and free of heavy products that could weight the curl down altering the curl pattern. Always keep in mind that your hair can have 2 different curl patterns and textures. Reading curly hair charts is just a starting point to figuring out your curl type.

Always remember all curl types are beautiful. No hair type id deemed better than the next at NTM. So here I have created an updated hair chart for US.

Curly hair is a beautiful and unique hair type that can come in a variety of patterns and textures. However, understanding and caring for curly hair can be a challenge. In this blog post, we will go over the most common curly hair types, their characteristics, and tips for caring for them so you can keep your curls looking healthy and beautiful.

One of the most common curly hair types is Type 2C. This type of curly hair is characterized by loose, defined curls that are thicker and more coarse in texture. Type 2C hair can be prone to frizz and dryness, so it's important to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and apply a leave-in conditioner or curl-enhancing cream to help define and tame the curls. Avoid using heat styling tools, as they can dry out and damage the hair.

Another common curly hair type is Type 3A. This type of curly hair is characterized by loose, bouncy curls that are more defined and well-formed than Type 2C curls. Type 3A hair tends to be more manageable than other curly hair types, but can still be prone to frizz and dryness. To care for Type 3A hair, use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and apply a leave-in conditioner or curl-enhancing cream to help define and tame the curls. Avoid using heat styling tools, as they can dry out and damage the hair.

Type 3B is also a common curly hair type, it is characterized by tight, defined curls that are more voluminous than Type 3A curls. Type 3B hair can be more prone to frizz and dryness than other curly hair types, so it's important to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and apply a leave-in conditioner or curl-enhancing cream to help define and tame the curls. Avoid using heat styling tools, as they can dry out and damage the hair.

Type 4A is another type of curly hair, it is characterized by tight, defined coils that are denser and more delicate than Type 3B curls. Type 4A hair can be more prone to breakage and dryness than other curly hair types, so it's important to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and apply a leave-in conditioner or curl-enhancing cream to help define and tame the curls. Avoid using heat styling tools, as they can dry out and damage the hair.

Lastly, Type 4B is a type of curly hair characterized by tight, kinky coils that are more fragile than Type 4A curls. Type 4B hair can be more prone to breakage and dryness than other curly hair types, so it's important to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and apply a leave-in conditioner or curl-enhancing cream to help define and tame the curls. Avoid using heat styling tools, as they can dry out and damage the hair.

It's important to remember that everyone's hair is unique, and these types are not set in stone. It is recommended to consult with a professional stylist or trichologist to get the best advice for your hair type and personal needs. Furthermore, always try to use sulfate-free, paraben-free, and natural ingredients based hair care products that will be gentle on your curls and scalp.

By understanding your curly hair type and following the appropriate hair care routine, you can keep your curls looking healthy and beautiful. With the right care, your curls will be bouncy, defined, and full of life.
